PayPal no longer requiring account set up!

PayPal rolled out a much-requested feature. Buyers are no longer required to set up a PayPal account when paying.

well obviously i'm biased, but i think PayPal is a great solution for more than just "microtransactions"... many people use PayPal for items with average order sizes well over $100, and even up to several $1000's of dollars.

currently i believe the max amount for a PayPal transaction is $10,000.

I agree. I've had successful transactions up to $9,450.00 USD. And out of the 4,000+ transactions we've processed, 99.999% are successful! I have also had buyers send Paypal when merchant processors would not approve the charge.

I've been with Paypal since Feb 2000. I've read lots of threads and have personally experienced the various ways a buyer can pull a scam. Of course, this is also possible with direct credit card. I just happen to see a few more ways for fraud to occur.

OK. Now I am excited. Gonna spend the next two days redoing alot of stuff on my site to accomadate the change.

Reckon this will put a dent in the pocket books of those folks in the merchant account biz?

This feature also appears NOT to be available when Requesting a Payment via the "Request Money" button on the main interface.

yep, we're working on extending this to Request Money, Subscriptions, and eBay transactions, and to non-US accounts in the near future. not quite there yet, but hopefully soon :)

currently, emphasis is on expanding coverage in EU countries and Asia, although we also hope to roll out further in Latin & South America.

country support kind of depends on a lot of items, including availability of info online to do proper fraud prevention, access to automated clearing house networks, and size of overall online population and demand.

that said, we plan to continue expanding support for PayPal around the world as quickly as we can...

When I found out about the new option I was very excited.

Right now I am working in Puerto Rico and I cannot see the new option anywhere.

I develop exclusively with PayPal and a lot of my customers are in PR (for whom I also make e-commerce sites)

Am I right in the suspicion that you have not included PR in the 'US' buyers? I have had a lot of problems in the past with PR credit cards and lost more than one customer because of these problems.

Is, in PayPal's geofilters, PR considered part of the US?

If not, when will this change?

I already in my first enthusiasm had sent out emails that my customers buyers would not have to sign up anymore, now it seems I have to eat my words ... very embarrassing!

One of the last few things on my wishlist for PayPal is the ability to specifiy a seperate IPN script URL for each email address registered to the account.

For anyone who has tried to run multiple websites with a single PayPal account (you are only allowed one per person) this would be extremely handy.

PayPalDave, I just issued my first Partial Refund - the one thing I noticed is that the customer has to accept/claim the refund amount if partial refunds are issued... similar to the way "Send Money" works.

This can cause problems since many customers never get around to claiming the money and causes us additional time trying to straighten this out. Any chance of making these partial refunds automatic like full refunds?

canuck: yes, we're looking into making the partial refund feature more automatic in the future, however we're hoping the current functionality is a big step in the right direction (yes?).

I'm about to shell out for a merchant account, but if UK paypal accounts will be getting the optional feature before april I'd rather wait.

well, a rough guess might be 2-3 months, but it could be longer/shorter, i really just don't know... the Intl team is still discussing the rollout plan, and there may be some legal issues to address depending on country.

in any case, we are working on it as fast as we can!

Also wondering if PayPal can give us an option to turn off the splash screen after login. For 3% fee per transaction PayPal can afford to stop showing us ads for credit cards, etc. if we don't want to see them.

It's very annoying and reminds me of the old AOL days where you were hit with a few "no thanks" buttons to click out of. AOL now gives it's members an option not to see them, PayPal should too.

I saw you guys included a 'where are you from' field, but even choosing US, NO OPTION for member or not here in PR.

Is it possible to find out from you whether there is a geofilter by IP in effect? And if so why PR is not part of the US?

By the way, Walmart stopped accepting the PayPal debit card since it's a Mastercard back in January, starting a worrysome trend. Does PayPal plan to stick with Mastercard as it's debit card vendor?

I think it's only available in the US at the moment, but they are planning on rolling out the feature internationally over the coming months.

I can't wait for it to be introduced as an option to UK account holders!

I got my first Paypal (optional) payment. Here are some clus when you receive payment:

1) Subject will say: "Notification of payment received"

for those of use who track customers, is the ability to send name / address data to paypal to pre populate forms available? to that they only have to enter name and addresses once? or does the name and address come through IPN on a non member payment so that it can be stored?

I too was waiting for such a simple way to add credit card payment for one or more items without having to get a merchant account, pay monthly service fees, etc..

So, I wrote some Perl code using the PayPal shopping cart features, (automated them in the script so I don't need to use the Button Factory), and have a nice little PERL/CGI Shopping Cart that will cost nothing more than standard web hosting fee and PayPal's 2.3 to 2.9 percent plus $0.30 per transacation fee.

No SQL/MySQL hosting, no certificates, no additional fees of any kind. I INSTANTLY had the ability to put an "Add to Cart" button next to something and have the e-commerce handled... no customer login, no cookie code, just sell right away.

I did it using home-brewed delimited text databases.

Nice work PayPal!
