They would take all my locked content and create separate optimised pages for SE's - one page for each article...they would do this as often as I require it to be done in order to keep all the pages up to date.
Then SE's will index all these pages...and then when someone clicks the link via a SE i.e. google...it will then take them to that page and then bump them on to my site which will then ask people to login or subscribe to get access to the article.
Obviously in my mind this raises some issues:
Is this cloaking? is it using redirects? is it dangerous for my site? Is there a better solution?

Yes, it is a form of cloaking.
It could possibly be dangerous for your site in relation to search engine rankings.
Anyone got any ideas about how to promote a locked DB to a SE?
You might want to consider promoting it from a different domain and sending all the human traffic to your primary domain's home page.
Apparently Google etc are ok with this as long as you are upfront about it and not doing anything nasty...ie in the google summary for a page you can just mention that the content is locked content etc.
Someone said I should get in touch with Google to discuss...will do so and report back
