I don't want to get into something this elaborate, but I have a single domain that I'd like to cloak. Is it possible to get high SE rankings using cloaking and having only one domain?
Any tips on how to go about this and suggestions for software that would meet my needs.
Thanks
I'm not one who has cloaked, but I've read enough to know it's voodoo magic ;)
Mod_rewrite is a popular way to cloak, you can create an .htaccess file and cloak depending on the IP address hitting the site, AFAIK, most people like to use both IP and user agent. All you need to do is learn the syntax.
Check out this forum library [webmasterworld.com] as well as this intro to mod_rewrite [webmasterworld.com].
>possible to get high rankings with one domain
Sure. Just an off the cuff example, but search for "webmaster", it's not a competitive term but its one thats used frequently by a large portion of the web, and this site is in the top 10, on top of 41M results. Not sure if cloaking has anything to do with that though ;)
WW has all the things you need though, stick around and find out.
In answer to your question: Yes, it's possible to get good rankings cloaking from one domain.
The reason I ask is I'm trying to decide if i should get into cloaking or if my competition is good enough to bother.

Most Competitive? [google.com]
There was a thread how to "mathematically" figure out a competitive term, in general, I'd think if the phrase has alot of adwords/advertisements involved then you can be sure there's money involved, and it's competitive.

Guaranteed there's some good info in some of the older posts.
When looking at the number of competitiors in the SERPS, e.g. the 290,000 or so that you pointed out, you cannot get a reasonable reprenstation of how competitive the industry is... 1,000 competitive pages -- 900 of which are using have SEO would be harder than 1,000,000 where only 25 are doing some heavy SEO...
Amount bid (I think as mentioned already) helps you learn a lot... as does browsing the top 20 terms... but NOT just for the MAIN key phrase (e.g. 'main keyphrase')... I find that I get a really good feel for competition by taking a look at the 4-worders (e.g. 'main keyphrase round blue') because you can see to what depths people are targetting a given industry and get a feel for how competitive it is.
In answer to your query, yes, you can get STELLAR results from cloaking one site. YOu can also get STELLAR results from non-cloaking (plain SEO) one site... ite depends on how much technology you utilize to beneift from economies of scale withing your sites.
See ya.
Done right, cloaking will have no effect on your ability to obtain good rankings in search engine results. It's the quality of your doorway pages that gets those results (these days, a lot of other factors play in those results, too).
All that being said, many commercial cloaking applications do include various tools for creating doorway pages, from throwing together random text with a certain keyword density, to full-blown, template based, on-the-fly doorway generators.
