Cloaking to allow access to bots?

Is this ok, or is there another way?

I am redesigning a site which currently requires a login to access certain areas of the site from the main page. I'm not worried about the content of the subscriber stuff being archived because it is pretty much an online store type thing and is about 1% text. (No not adult material either) But not really indexable.

Also because it is an online store, it really wouldn't be a bad thing anyway if it was archived.

Is it OK to present a 'free pass' to robots but require a password for humans? Is there a way to do this without cloaking? I am mostly concerned with links to subscriber sites being picked up, and right now they are not accessable.

I am also considering a free directory in the non-subscriber portion of the site, but I am worried about the potential for abuse.

I think in the strictest sense this would be considered abuse. What would you do if a surfer clicked on an indexed link that is password protected?
