A site for the USA and UK using cloaking

The server is in the UK, so will this mean slow connections in the USA

Whilst going through my loggings, we found a 1/4 of our visitors were from the USA. Strange we thought. The reason for it being strange is this.

(Example not related to our site keywords)
In the UK we call it Football
In the USA they call it Soccer
(forget american football right now)
Our keyword is Football and Soccer is not mentioned once in the whole site.

We have a .co.uk and a .com both targeted at the UK market. But could we use cloaking on the .com to target the USA market. I dont want to change the .com into a site just for the USA, as I like having to sites in the #10 of google. If we cloak then will there be speed reduction for the Americans because the the server is in the UK. Is the best option to make a totally new site, which we dont want to do because our domain brand is great and has meaning for both side of the pond.

Could you? Of course you could. However, you would probably have to develop an in-house solution for this. I've never seen a commercial product designed to serve different sites based on the nationality of the surfer.

You could determine the nationality of the surfer based on their IP address, and use Mod_Rewrite to serve a different site.
