Server cloaking or anonymization -- is there value?

I am wondering what your thoughts are as to the value of server anonymization, masking header data, TCP/IP settings and other telltale signs that you are using a certain OS and Web server.

I'm no expert but I've seen suggestions from server security experts that this is a good practice to help deter casual hackers. It shouldn't have any detrimental effects re: web sites/search engines.
