cloaked or inaccessible html source code

Why stop at metatags - I wanna cloak the whole thing!

I've seen some sites that when, running Win 2000/IE 5.5, I click to 'view source' through my browser and I get an "access denied' or 'access violation' error message instead of a tidy window of source code. No html source code is displayed whatsoever. I'm curious as to how these pages are being delivered as to hide all the html source code, and if it's limited to a particular server type (WIN, Unix, etc.)

This is the elusive white elephant for me. Did I sleep through that html programmers meeting? Is this a external js script, SSI, a cloaking script or ??? (C'mon... I can't be the only one out in left field on this one, or AM I?)

It seems I spend all my time lately killing popup windows for digital cameras and hot teen girls...

Welcome to WebmasterWorld igirl,

It's done with javascript and is easily defeated, most examples around are of the type you describe, they produce a warning message when right click or view source is clicked.

Here is a variaton [summerholiday.org] that is a little more inventive, and Here is a thread [webmasterworld.com] with a discussion of the usual technique.

Hmmm. I guess maybe I didn't explain this or -- maybe I'm not understanding the answer.

I wasn't referring to the tired, popular 'no-right-click' script. I mean, at a few selected ultra-top secret dont-steal-my-bandwidth honor-copyright-you-thief-or-else kinda sites if I go to my browser's toolbar to 'view' --->'view source' (without clicking anything on the actual page I want to view -- I'm not clicking a link or mouseover or a blank area of background) the source code that pops up in the little notepad-type window (IE 5) is some type of 'access' or 'security violation' or derivitive thereof that is generated by the page I want to view the source code for. No head tags, no body tags, no NOTHING. Just that message comes up in the notepad-style window.

I'm going to feel like a complete a** if that's what the original answer to my post was. Sorry. I'm tired :(

Kick me. Beat me. I see now when viewing the source code once agin, after 5 cups of coffee, that it was just another simple Jedi Mind Trick (hiding the html source). The code simply has some kind of <copyright blah blah > appear at the very top of their HTML code, way above the <html> and <head> tags, yadda yadda, so it isn't immediately apparent or available, unless you scroll twelve miles down the page notepad brings up... and then the actual page source code shows up loud and clear.

What next? Should I play the coin under the nutshell game with a four year old? I feel like that's about my level of intellectual agility at this hour.

Sorry!

Well, don't feel too bad, it's an old trick that's gotten most scratching their heads in a tired moment. HERE is a variation [webmasterworld.com] of that hide your html you might find amusing.
