I found an article which suggested buying old domain names that are for sale or available, creating blogs with related content and using that blog as a way to get backlinks.

BUT what is the old blog was hit with toxic links, is the new own penalized for the old backlinks the previous owner had?

I don't know that the old type of link building is the way you want to go today. Backlinks don't carry the weight today that they were touted for a few years ago, certainly not a plan for success. Work on getting legitimate backlinks from real sites that want to share your content. Just my 2 cents. There are some very helpful articles and discussions here regarding today's linking climate and ideas to work on building good links. Check the Link Development Forum here: [webmasterworld.com...] .

As an aside, would the WhoIs for the purchased old domains show your WhoIs? G and B certainly take that into account as well.

When I first started my business six years ago, I went with a domain name but within a 3 months found it to not work for me so I rebranded it as something else. I then went to GoDaddy and 301 redirected all traffic from the old site to my new site.

About a year ago, I stopped paying GoDaddy for the old domain. We lost it.

We then begin to fall off of Google around that time. Not saying that was the problem, but we may have been getting some juice from backlinks that were registered to my old site.

Now, the old site is for sale at a good price. I wonder if I should buy it and just redirect it again?
