I guess I know what I'm doing today (checking my server for any use of free wordpress themes).

well everybody already knew this ...
but it was interesting to read such a well researched article rather than just rely on my own assumptions.
speaking of which i assume this applies to all kind of other free themes - not just wordpress - i've always avoided such things myself, i've figured they are suspect (nothing is really free) or they are just badly constructed by someone relatively inexperienced

Hmmm, I use mostly paid themes, but for free ones I usually look through the Wordpress interface. I wonder how well-vetted those are?

Ive paid for a theme on my site, one file. functions.php is encrypted, ive been through it with a decoder( im no php expert)and as far as i can see its there purely to leave a link to the creators site. Makes you wonder...
