Search engine Ask.com said Monday it opened an office in Hamburg, Germany.

Eric Heymann -- given the title of director of global content acquisition -- will run the new office. He worked previously at Seekport Internet Technologies GmbH. He also worked at Lycos Europe N.V. and helped create two German-language search engines.

The German office will focus on research and development. The Oakland company is owned by IAC/Inter-ActiveCorp (NASDAQ: IACI), a 28,000-employee company based in New York.

Ask.com has other research offices in Campbell and in Piscataway, N.J., Pisa, Italy and Hangzhou, China.
