Is the only way to appear in ask.com buy sponsored listings? Where does the "natural" results come from then?

You can't submit your site to ask.com, if that is what you are asking. The only way to get in is for their spider to find you from a link from another site.

What site should I be in to be spidered? Dmoz? Google?

Which site the link is from doesn't matter much, as long as it's spidered and indexed by Ask. Best bet: search Ask.com for your topic, and ask those webmasters to link to your site.

From the About Ask.com [sp.ask.com] pages:

Q: How do I register my site/URL with Ask so that it will be indexed?
A: ... we no longer offer a paid Site Submission program. ... your site should appear in our Search index as a result of our ongoing "crawling" of the Web for new and updated sites and content...
