I was just getting the "wack a mole" routine down pat with pop ups.
the other ones that get me are the flash ones that make noise, the expanding ones that expand on the mouseover. have seen lots of those on yahoo. and then the pop-up/unders that are a screencapture with the windows bars and you hit the wrongX to close it and a few new windows open. ugh
Yes, if folks can't figure out any other way to make the ads disappear, no matter how annoying they are or how little interest the person has in the product, they'll click on anything to make it go away. Which, unfortunately, means they'll click exactly where the advertiser wants them to click and go exactly where the advertiser wants them to go. Thus escalating the use of more obnoxious advertising on the web.
As for the ads that go up and don't even allow you to close them until they're finished "doing their thing" - can you say "commercials on the internet", boys and girls? I knew you could! YUCK!
Especially one that happens to a large extent by accidentally hitting the ad window instead of the close window button.
These "click lures" are being called onto the carpet more and more. They are being exposed for their unreliable tactics.
As the ad rates increase these companies will be driven by out by market forces. I for one can't wait!
I've been sending messages to the web sites that have these ads and the companies advertised telling them I will not visit the site again or purchase any products from these companies until the ads are gone. Only way to stop it is to let them know it doesn't work.
