State vs. City keyword results are very different

I get over 3,000 results w/city in my KW, but only 2 results for State

Why is it that when I search "keyword keyword Denver" I get over 3,000 results (my site is number 1), but then I do the "keyword keyword Colorado" and I get only two results (my site not one of them)? The two keywords in for both searches are identical.

It would make sense to me because when looking for geographic stuff, I'd imaging people use specifics according to city, not state. If you're advertisigin a site selling cars you wouldn't say cars in colorado, you'd say cars in denver.

As we're in the yahoo forum, I assume you're talking about a Yahoo search & the SERPs for Directory site matches.

If that's the case, that's surprising as any matches that are in the regional directory should match on both Denver & Colorado since both words are in the cat path.

If you're talking about Wordtracker or Overture search volume, I'd agree with 2 much. Most people are going to search for keyword city instead of keyword state. Unless you maybe live in a particulary small state/area like rhode island.

OK, I think I figured it out. It wasn't a difference about "state vs. city", it was Yahoo's categories "web sites" vs. "web pages".

My site was listed under the "web pages" category tab but not the "web sites" category tab.

I noticed that the only two sites listed under the "web sites" category were ones that have been listed in Yahoo's human edited directories.

So, now my question becomes: how do I get listed in one of Yahoo's human edited directories for free for a business? Impossible?

Impossible? Either yes or just next to it. I've not gotten a commerical site into yahoo in quite a while. Anyone else?

Hey Drumat5280,

It's nearly impossible to get a business site listed in Yahoo.com You may want to try submitting to the other Yahoo's, such as yahoo.co.uk and asia.yahoo.com, but your chances are pretty slim.

Good luck!

The best you might be able to do (for free) is modify an existing yahoo commercial listing. Otherwise it's time to get the check book out.
