Getting multiple listings

Large organisation - multiple topic website

My client (a large non-profit organisation) has a huge website that covers multiple topics. New sections are added often, and each of these is effectively a mini site on its own.

I want to list two of these sub-sites in Yahoo. They're completely different in content and would fit into completely different categories. I'm planning on taking the quick route and paying via BizExpress.

I'm just a bit concerned that the Yahoo editors may decide this organisation already has a listing (actually it has 2) even if the URL is slightly different (folders, sub-domains, etc), and reject it on this basis. I want to be sure how best to submit these sections before giving them the cash.

What's the general rules with multiple listings ? The guidelines on Yahoo don't cover this in enough detail.

I can tell you in my experience for a "non-paying" site that I have got 2 listings on Yahoo, 1 for the home page of a URL and one for a folder under that URL.

The funny thing is I didn't submit the "2nd one"....so it must be OK in Yahoo's eyes to have 2 or more listings from a site "where appropriate", i.e. their discression.

I had a multi-national client whose business legitimately covered many different areas of business.

Their site is very, very big. Each section which serves a different market/area of business is clearly identified, with a 'hub page' for each. It literally is like several sites under one corporate umbrella.

Yahoo would not accept multiple listing for this site. Even if we paid for each listing under Biz Express. This is before other considerations such as the use of Java nav's etc.

It really does make me wonder how a searcher's interest is best served in this example. If the company has clear and unique content for each listing and can justify why they should be considered across multiple categories surely this ensures that the searcher is taken to the listing which best meets their needs.

It was also the case that a potential search for each site section would potentially use radically different search phrases - so there was no chance of an overlap and the site being returned too many times for one search.

Beats me!

We had multiple payed for inclusions for commercial sites. We had third level domains for every section. Such as lotto.domain.com, cars.domain.com and travel.domain.com ect.

Inclusions where submitted in a bundle in a pretty open and straightforward way. We had very few rejections. I believe that if you have sufficient content for every topic they can include it.

I dont know if third level domains helped in any way. We used them to make sure of having the keyword in URL. But I read somewhere they will not include domain.com/cars/.

That's really interesting MacGuru, as I though that Yahoo did not allow third level or sub domains at all!

Was this on a site that you hosted - and therefore had control over the server, or was it hosted by an ISP which offered this service?

The site was hosted by my client (a portal). He had total control on his servers. Most hosting companies dont charge a lot for this service.

Thanks MacGuru - I'll see if this is possible for my client and for others in future.

We did this almost 2 years ago. Since then they introduced bundeled discounts. If you can get all of your clients ready at the same time, you can maybe do it for cheaper. (if volume is sufficient)

By the way, it's Macguru (no capital G). I am just a little guru. ;)

*UPDATE*

Try "lotto", you can see a lot of URL like this : domain.com/lotto. Then you can search for one of those domain names. Some have many listings.
