Can't Get into Yahoo! Directory

My website comes up at the top of the page of search results with the other nine top search engines, but I can't get into Yahoo's directory. It's ironic, because they listed me in Yahoo! Magazine last September.

I've gone to the bottom of the right category and submitted my site about every two months for the last century. Any ideas? I looked through the postings but didn't see anything quite like this question. Please excuse me if it's an old topic.

Also, does anywhere know a good (free) place to see a current (maybe monthly) listing of the top search engines?

Thank you, Peter

Hi Peterinwa....funny you should mention a list of search engines. I just ran across a strange little list - get this domain name:
www.search-engines-search-engine.com

I don't agree with their "ranking" in their list (how could our beloved GOOGLE be # 4???) - but they state that they are using their own status criteria for their list. Useful? I dunno. I mean....they still have Infoseek in the list :o

If you just pay Yahoo the $299 that they want they'll have you listed within a week. The free submit form is almost useless unless your site in non profit...

That was the question I forgot to ask in the previous post....whether or not you have paid the $299 ?

Thanks for the search engine list.

Course, now that I see Yahoo! is number one I feel worse that I can't get listed?

Peter, does the site work in Netscape 4.7?

My site is non-profit and I haven't paid a fee.

It sounds like I'm not doing anything wrong... their priorities are with the money.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know.

P.S.

Yes, it works in Netscape 4.7.

A site should work in Netscape 4x and up, work without Javascript, and have unique content on the site itself, even with paying.

We just submitted a non-profit a few months ago without paying and it was listed within 30 days... One thing that we did that you might want to try is to include all the non-profit tax id codes and such in one of the additional info fields...

If that doesn't work... I'd probably just give them the money..

Even with non-profit sites it can take a long time before its aproved. I submitted a site once and it had a DOWNLOAD link on it which I never paid attention to, a few months later it was rejected couz the catagories were empty they told me to resubmit when it had stuff in it ;)

The profile site with NS 4.7, Win98 with Javascript disabled: all the homepage shows when arriving at the site is:

JavaScript Requirement

In order to function our Calculator requires that your browser support the JavaScript programming language. Either your browser does not support it, or it has been disabled.

If you would like assistance please e-mail us

Thank you.

I believe that Yahoo wants sites to be accessible for all surfers, so that could be it. It's certainly not worth the risk of $299 for a year, particularly if there's no revenue from the site. The Javascript issue was brought up in a thread here not too long ago.

It sounds like my problem with Yahoo! must be that my website requires JavaScript. I use it to run the calculator -- which is all the site is -- so I can't get around it.

Thanks for the input. I'll just give up with them.

I must say again, though, that it's ironic that they would list me in their magazine. That's what got my site so much attention!

I'm up to over 1200 visitors a day now which is pretty good for an old man's hobby!

Thanks again,

Peter

Peter, there's no such thing as old, just not as young as you used to be. With that amount of traffic, why don't you add some text content, put the calculator on a separate page and SELL something!!

Marcia,

I used to try to sell topic-related books with very clever techniques that got me nowhere. I finally decided just to keep it free. Also, you don't have to pay to get listed in search engines.

I figure when I hit 25,000 visitors a day maybe someone will come along and make me an offer. Haha.

Putting content on the homepage and the calculator on a second page would work if it weren't for the fact that 99% of the reason visitors come to my website is to use the calculator.

On another subject... now I see even more clearly why I never got into Yahoo's directory. It was only recently that I learned that people browsed without JavaScript. At that time I added the note that it was required.

So in the past when Yahoo has taken a look I guess they only found a blank screen and figured my site was down.

Thanks again for the input, Peter

P.S.

If Yahoo! were really cleaver, their search engine results would include sites that required JS IF the searcher's browser was JS enabled. That'd be easy to do!
