Why don't Yahoo drop my rivals?

Their Web sites haven't been updated in years...

Many of the sites in the category where our site is listed at Yahoo haven't been updated for years.

I was wondering why Yahoo doesn't drop them... I'm saying this from a purely selfish point of view: then my site will begin to gain more hits from Yahoo :)

Are Yahoo editors keen on delisting sites that haven't been updated since 1999 or whatever? Or do they retain them in the directory for their historical/archive value (i.e. reviews of films from the last decade).

I would provide you with a hotlink to the category in question, but the editors of this forum are extremely strict when it comes to links.

I haven't read the Yahoo agreement lately but I'd wager that updating the site isn't a criteria to remain listed. As long as the site is live and is cross browser compatible and is on topic with the Title and Desc in Y! then it deserves to stay listed IMO.

Nope, never seen anything about dropping sites because they aren't updated.

You could always see if your competition really wants to keep the sites and make an offer, or, watch those domain expirations.

I have a site which requires very little updating but which is still "very pertinent" to the subject matter. Why on earth should it be dropped?

It has a respectable number of links and does quite well in the search engines in spite of the fact that I haven't had time to optimize it. I would be royally ticked off if it got dropped just because it wasn't updated regularly.

Liane - I wasn't referring to sites that hadn't been updated for a few weeks or even months. I'm taking about sites that have been dead since circa. 1998, ridden full or broken links and outdated information.

JamesR - good tip about lapping up the domain names when they expire. Thanks.

I think the site should be dropped when it doesnt pass the Yahoo's criterial meets anymore, that includes broken links, images and what not.

If I build a site and do not update it for 2 years Im still enjoying the traffic - Don't bother it! ;) Isn't that what a webmaster wants, constant traffic.

Yeah,

There are certain elements of ABSOLUTE and FACTUAL information that remains constant. A site on the theory of relatively available on the web from day one should always be listed until its no longer there

I can totally agree with the logic of that. Thats half the idea of the web, we dont have to keep reproducing the same garbage over and over again :) /sarcasm
