Recieved a newsletter today about what it takes to rank well in Yahoo. I thought it was helpful so I'm passing it along. I think that every time they send a newsletter the topic will change so if you are looking for this page in a week or so, you may have to do a search for this article.

I like most of the info except for the Direct Hit stuff. That has not been widely accepted and is just theory. They left out some other key ingredients that we have been talking about:

I would read here for Yahoo info. That way if there is misleading information it will usually be pointed out.

Hmmm, these kinds of 'drops' are always difficult for us [webmasterworld.com].

What are there a thousand sites out there on marketing and promotion? (and that's just between the moderators - lol) What if my nightmare came true and they all came here and drop links to their articles like the above? (we call them "drivebys").

Perfect case is right here. What should we do? Delete the thread and risk offending both a current great member and also the person on the other end of the link who is a good member here too?

If not, what do we tell the other 1000 people who want to come and do the same?

The exact situation happened just last week. In that case, I deleted the drive by and offended a potential good friend - who in turn, ran off and spread foo about us.

Or should we just move to the slashdot model and require approval for all new threads?

It's a very delicate issue - far more than members realize. We've talked about it alot on moderators trying to find a balance (in fact, this very thread has 18 msgs in the mods forum right now - running about 8-2 in favor of zapping - we yeild to James...his forum).

It certainly won't hurt my feelings if you drop the thread. It was meant to be helpful but if it causes confusion, by all means, delete it.

Zap me!

Tip #1: Show Yahoo the money!.
Tip #2: Get real cozy with a Yahoo editor (caution, care should be taken to avoid a nasty breakup).
Tip #3: Develop and maintain an anti-Yahoo site (sure to catch Yahoo's attention and drive visitors to your site).
Tip #4: You wouldn't happen to know the Lawnmower Man, would you...
Tip #5: Buy Yahoo (you can pay it off later with pop-up ads).
Tip #6: Give Yahoo more money.
Tip #7: Pay some more money (very important).
Tip #8¦ Finally, cough up some more dough.

Brett,

Create a section in a person's profile for these type of links. That way a person can reference them by saying "link #7 in my profile is a great way about getting listed in Yahoo!"

In your profile, there would be a section for this. You could then have a title, URL link, and a short decription..

Just my 2 cents.

Janie, oh dear - you did nothing wrong at all - no no - quite the contrary. That's fine.

It's just an education thing we have to do with members I think. Not all can quite understand where we stand with the issue. As you can tell, it's wide open for debate on all fronts. I've tried several times to set a written policy that will work for just about everyone - can't be done.

Brett - I am new here, so I understand if my opinion doesn't carry too much weight. That said, while I think these URL drops are sometimes very useful - I nevertheless understand your concerns. Maybe Bradley's solution:

Create a section in a person's profile for these type of links.

If it could be implemented, would be a workaround. Anyone who is really interested could find a URL. Don't know - this issue raises tough questions.
