Very bad description in Yahoo

No traffic from yahoo

I hired a SEP company to promote my site and one of the first things they did was to submit to Yahoo. The description they provided was throughoutly edited by the Yahoo editor and ranks very poorly (besides being a bad description for the site).

The SEP company appealed to the editor, but after almost 1 month there hasn't been any answer. I'm not getting _any_ traffic from yahoo and that entry is definitely not worth the $300 (or the money I paid the SEP company).

How can I fix this?

Out of curiosity can you sticky mail me the SEP company that you hired, and how their other seo work has turned out apart from Yahoo?

Hi frr,

This can be a real pain. I feel sorry for you. The only thing you can do is to hit them once a month with a polite e-mail.

I suggest you read this excellent thread [webmasterworld.com] about Yahoo! to find a decent description and title you could suggest to the Yahoo guy.

Try to write the message with the visitors benefit in perspective.

Do you think the original description was overdone? They sometimes 'punish' you if you try to stuff to many keywords in submission. They like it very short.

Good luck!

It is indeed sad, but I don't know any experienced SEO who has not had this happen to him or her at some point. While appeals sometimes work, that is usually only the case if the description they have given is inaccurate.

We have had some (very) limited succcess with post-appeal problems by email when we point out that the assigned description is misleading to the point that Yahoo searchers would not be able to find the product when they are looking for it.

Hi frr, welcome to WmW.

The description of the site you listed in your profile isn't bad, but I'm not sure what your target kw's are.

One suggestion would be for you to read a little bit here in the forum, and then create a secondary domain that you can use to drive traffic to your main domain. This one could contain static info, and you name it with your keywords. This will help you get your keywords in the title...the description is very hard to control.

Let me know if you have any more questions about this.

These are the keywords suggested by the SEO company, and the Yahoo entry doesn't rank on any of them... :(

That's what I was planning to do. :) Is that considered OK?
Should I change the name of the product too?

Wouldn't that be another $300.

I had the same problem, mate. Once a month for 3 months, I wrote a polite email. When nothing was done, I bombarded every department with emails, I phoned them twice a day, and told them how very angry I am. The listing was not only corrected, but the put the site in a number of better categories in way of apology. Writing a polite email won't work. They're too busy for that. What you have to do is pester them.

I am still waiting for a reply from Yahoo about my appeal for a description change.

It has been over 3 months so let me know if you hear anything.

I think we should try to start some kind of legal trial against them for swindling our $300 bucks and sticking us with lemon listings.

They just replied and changed the description. A bit better...

Unless it _really_ helps with Google, this listing is not worth the money. I get MUCH more traffic from shareware directories.

If what happened to us is usual, I don't think they'll still be in business in a few years.

Wow frr, that's great, it's very very rare that they'll change a description.

They seem to be trying to improve their customer service. Gives me hope.

I have a feeling some editor for Yahoo was reading this thread because I just got a reply too. Well at least we were heard.
But i'm still not 100% satisfied. My site is in a very comepetitive market and every little bit of help is needed to help it receive more traffic. When Yahoo! first lists your site, they give you a little pic that says NEW and you are listed at the top of the category you are in. My site's description stunk at the time I was there, and I feel like I should be allowed to go back to NEW again, because I don't feel that my site was properly represented at the time and as so, it didn't receive as many clicks as it probably could have.

My site is also not listed in all of the categories it should be listed. And no, i'm not streching for extra categories, I really belong in them.

I know it's wishful thinking, but I really hope they fix this. I may have to start a bombardment campaign like frr above. :(

kastro, with respect they gave you the right cat and a good description, your title though is awful but that is down to you. Time to rethink and go at them from another angle, don't waste your time with more appeals.

I spoke with an ad rep from Yahoo! a month ago, and for the first time ever, found myself talking with an intelligent, concerned person. I mentioned it, and he said the directives from the top were to improve customer service, something they have always ignored. Hopefully, this will lead to a better Yahoo.

If your description get's badly edited, then you probably got an editor in a bad mood. At any rate, if you want to win for something like "how to write a resume", your site should be called "How to Write a Resume" with the url www.how-to-write-a-resume.something, and filing a DBA in your state to do business under the name "How to Write a Resume.something" helps a lot - especially when dealing with Yahoo, LookSmart, and ODP. They can't argue with you about your title then.

Are you stating that the above-listed directories actually check local DBA filings??? I've been around, and I certainly never heard of anything like that.

That is a news item!!

Laisha, sometimes they do check the whois information. If you have that DBA then you can legally call your site that title, but I've heard of people who give false DBA's when registering domain names.
Is this what you meant?

I meant that when you complain via email about your listing, mentioning that you are doing business under the name will help in getting the title you want with Yahoo! and with LookSmart. That's all I've ever had to do. They don't have time to check. Still, registering is extremely inexpensive, and I've done it to cover my butt.

Oh and in response to NFFA,

"My title is horrible"

It's the name of the company and although I applied for another title, they stuck by their rules and changed my title to the title of the company which we are... I wasn't gonna argue with them on that since I know that that is there policy.
