Next month, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company will begin charging a fee for the use of its online payment service, PayDirect. The company will charge 30 cents plus 2.5 percent of the cost of each transaction made using the service.

I wonder what else they can monetize...maybe charge surfers per click...

good guess james...you were close :)

now i'm wondering what's next, after that renewal fee...my guess is they'll go with their own PPC tool...i wonder if they'll get rid of the directory and make the "sites" be PPC listings?

or maybe they'll charge for email?

I'm with you 2_Much... their own PPC is next... BUT only available for sites that have shelled out the $300 per annum.

It's a well worn path... as they wreck the quality of their returns they lose surfers and then wreck the returns even further for short term cash.... etc.... etc

I might be wrong here, but I'm doubting yahoo will completely dump the directory and goto ppc. Perhaps they will have ppc search in combination with the directory, but I see the directory as something that will stay. The reason is the number of employees they must have to review the directory sites, both free and paid. I don't see them simply converting these people into PPC reviewers either. What about the people who run stuff like the free historical directories. Would they be interested in changing their job to simply reviewing pr0n listings?

One thing is for sure if they start chargin for email then they will die a death sooner than later. The only real thing they have going for them from a users viewpoint is the ever declining search results and the free email service.

If they get rid of them then they will go downhill very quickly IMHO.

I've heard there is a study under way by 3 large sites to study the feasibility of charging ISP's to access their site.

You mean where users have to pay extra on their ISP packages for a premium service? Where Yahoo would be like ordering HBO for cable tv?

I remember that thread about charging ISP's, it was something going on in the UK I think (it's somewhere on this site though).

They better drop that idea like a hot potato or end up like Enron.

Crikey whatever next eh?

Personally I think Yahoo are marvellous, and I really hope they manage to stay in business.

Personally, I would love to see yahoo disappear. I only use their email for spam receptors and an occasionally I play their online chess which is halfway decent.
