Anyone know why Yahoo is so popular? I've just got an entry in there (only too a couple of weeks! :) ) and my traffics just gone through the roof?

A)They invested a lot in marketing on conventionnal media.
B)They offer a loadfull of free services to users so they stick there.
C)They have some really easy to remember brand name.
D)They are well established in the market since a while back.

Expect some better positions on SE using link pop soon...

Yahoo, while popular with the general public, is not the most comprehensive or relevant search entity by a long shot.

What actually makes them who they are is the fact that they are a well-known brand. Like AOL -- who is not the best at what they do either -- the recognizability of their brand name is conducive to driving the "less internet savvy" crowd which is made of of people like -- yes, you guessed it -- my mother.

And by my own reckoning, people like my mother, while not among those who drive technology, are indeed those who drive the economy.

Who do you think is more likely to open her wallet to pay someone she doesn't know? Me? Or my mother?

They are everywhere!

According to [linkpopularity.com...] [hey, just one source]

Yahoo! has 16,231,498 links from AV & HotBot
plus 1,140,000 references of some sort in Google.

One person named "duhwebmaster" works 26 hours a day developing links for Yahoo!

Also, I think the listings themselves aren't bad. I tend to find good info when I search on Yahoo. They're relevance has decreased considerable since the end of last year, but in some categories they provide access to good content.

Personally, I think it's a mixture of branding, stickiness, and relevance.
