I found that roughly 10% of the shown returns, the ones at the tail end of things (880-1000 of the first 1000 shown of 1300-odd total) were to non-existent pages.
Some were to old pages that are gone, and have been returning either a 404 or 410 for quite some time, depending on whether I expect to resurrect the information at some point.
Most however are in the format of
www.domain.tld/foldername/out006e.css
with some others being in the format of
www.domain.tld/foldername/%20realfilename.htm
I don't use alphanumeric filenames that end in .css and I never have, nor did the site folks who preceded me. I have had spaces in file names before (back before I learned better from coming here), but I never have had any blank spaces at the start of a file name.
I sent a note to Y, with a request to reroute to appropriate folks, via Explorer Beta feedback (only feedback route I saw right off. However, I'm curious as to possible explanations and whether there is anything else I can do to assist the removal of over 100 bad links in the serps. The only bright spot is the error page I use does have a functional link back into the site so folks wanting to do so are not stuck at a dead end.
