One of my sites got struck very badly on yahoo search engine in september 2005. The consequences were extreme, as all pages stopped to show in the top 1000 results.
Please note that the site was not banned, as it still shows many pages from the site in the siteexplorer search.
We had more than 200 000 dynamic pages in their index, and now we erased all those pages except 100 pages with new content.
Yahoo has not crawled our new pages, and has not erased the old pages as of today. (we erased this content 4 months ago).
I tried to email them and they sent me the message about the possible penalty and asking to reply if you want yahoo to re-review your site.
I sent this "reinclusion request" to yahoo maybe 2 months ago, and still not ranking for any keyphrase, even for my own name!
Do you think that this site could eventually take back some positions in the serps, given more time?
I took everything down in Nov05 and redid my pages, nothing is duplicate but still nothing.

You see my site has been removed completely from the yahoo SERPS in october. It indexes thousand of now-erased dynamic pages that were very spammy...
We erased all those pages and rebuilt some 100 pages of quality unique content, to start over, if you like.
Since we replaced all the content and added a 410 to all the crappy pages, nothing really happened as yahoo os not even deleting pages from it's index.
We don't seem to be banned from yahoo as a site: search on yahoo gives back more than the home page only.
I wrote two times to yahoo to have a re-review of our site, but still no recrawling and reindexing activity.
We are now thinking that it would have been wiser to lauch the new quality content on another domain.. but that is another story!

I tend to think start again with Yahoo, I have started a different site on a different topic.
If it ranks at all well then I will know what I should have done with the first site!

You mean that we should launch the same content but on another domain? One domain for google and another domain for yahoo?
Because the thing is tat if I launch the same content with another domaine, google will very likely detect it and penalize both sites for duplicate content.
So I guess you'll have to block google from one of the two sites. But that also means doing two link building campaings for the same content on two different domains...
It's not easy already to find good links for the first domain, it will be harder to find other good links to give to the second site.

Im saying im aware of a significant number of people who have done that and have had good success. Im saying actual duplicate content, in the examples i know of, does not seem to be a factor. This may be due to the content of banned sites not being filtered in the same way as non-banned sites, i dont know. I can only observe. Of course you would need to weigh up the pro's and cons and not undertake this lightly. I am not recommending you do this. I am saying it seems to me the bans handed out by yahoo have had the opposite effect that were trying to achieve.
Also in this last update i have seen some duplicated sites get hit, this may be conincidence, again i dont know. But this is the first time i have seen that happen.
I think I was not clear enough in my last post. What I think is that if I launch the same content on a new domain that is for yahoo only, then I have to double the number of links needed to promote the same and single content.
I'm stunned by the stupidity of the yahoo engine.
I deleted ALL pages of my site since like 5 months ago, still yahoo has not dropped the page count.
Also, if I search my site's name in quotes, it will not even list my site on the first like 10 pages!
Now I run my new content on the old domain that was all changed. Google is starting to reinstate my site into it's rankings with the new content... But with yahoo, still looking forward to the deletion of old content even after 5 months...

Maybe this goes to speak about the quality of the content to begin with. Why would anyone delete content from their site unless it was worthless?
Saying that, why would a search engine give you high rankings based on (sic) such content. One should expect if they have content that is , er, 'replaceable', then it would stand to reason it wont stay in the serps forever?

The thing is the first content that we erased (more than 500 000 pages) was in fact absolutely worthless yes.
What we wanted to do is ot save the domain (to keep the inbound links) but to replace the worthless content with new, (hand written) quality content.
What we are hoping is that eventually the SE's will see the new content on the old domain, and then remove the penalty.
Maybe it was a terrible mistake, as we should have published the new content on a another domain, of course we are thinking about that now ( moving the content to another site...)
What I'm wondering is how come Yahoo cannot just recrawl my site and consider the 410's, erase the ld pages and crawl the new ones...
PLease not I'm not talking about keeping my old rankings, just to have the new site crawled and indexed properly

I deleted a few hundred junk pages from my domain last summer, and I have been adding lots of real hand-written content. Yahoo still has 100 or so of my old pages in their site: index that no longer exist, but recently, they finally began removing many of them, and spidered a few pages other than just my homepage. I take it this is a good sign?
Currently, only my homepage is "Cached."
Don't give up on Yahoo if that is your goal, but at the same time realize that Yahoo itself is struggling under the chaos of it's own syste,m.
I have had sites completely removed that were hobby sites (no seo applied whatsoever)
After 3-4 months magically they reappeared.
I wouldn't put much stock there to be honest unless it was a major source of traffic for you.
If so, I would take a shot at completely cleaning the site up and having useful content. Only when it is ready again, apply one more time.
Having a proper sitesmap with the new content first at the top of the sitemap is very helpful.
I have found that disallowing yahoo access to files via htacess has been fairly successful in getting some pages removed in Yahoo.
I'd correct your mistakes, and maybe get some folks here to give your site a look to see if anything else needs to be done, before you contact Yahoo! for reinclusion. Remember to be nice when contacting them after all of your corrections are made...they don't owe us anything, but can give us a lot.

The last I herd is that Yahoo is still battling the problem in their search algorithm and hardware.
Many are affected including my site, from 700+ unique before July 2004 (Yahoo update) to almost zero.
The only traffic I get from them is via Yahoo shopping i.e. ppc.
I think we need to give more time till we see some improvements, dealing with the complex mechanism of a search engine is not simple and when you get stuck (the stage Yahoo is probably in) it could take a long time before you can fix it. Take for example Google Big Daddy update it will probably continue for another 1-3 months.
Keep your head above the water and I’m sure we will all come back strong.
One more thing I found out this week that there is another search engine emerging soon, I will keep you posted as soon as I get more details.
As for my site..
I cleaned it up in october (deleted all 500 000 pages except 150) ...
Those 150 are 100% pure original quality content written by me...
Now last i've seen it's that 5 months later yahoo dropped it's page count to 30 000...
Come on yahoo still a lot to go!
You know sometimes they say you learn from your mistakes in this business etc..
Well I learned that if you want to start over with a site, don't use a spammy domain hoping that the engines will adapt in less than a year!
Why didin't I changed domain in the first place?
I don't know really, looking back I think it's because I did not want to lose the few quality backlinks I had with the domain.. stupid..
