Why Do Linkdomain: Search Results Differ from Site Explorer?

Why does a linkdomain: search give a totally different result than a link count from the Site Explorer? Linkdomain give over 1500 and Site Explorer shows just 300.

Neither of these will be 100% acurate, as it is not based on the actual number of links that exist, but the number of links that have been found to exist at some recent point in the past.

link: command is supposed to give backlinks for that link only, where as linkdomain: may include links for the whole domain, usually this would be more links than for a single url (even if its domain name), so results would differ.
