Long time listener - first time caller....

I handle the SEO for a few local sites. All of my sites have experienced hiccups, difficulties, successes, etc - all the norm. But I am having problems with one site and only with Yahoo!

Here's the gritty:

The site is in the Yahoo! Directory. It's been live for a bit, etc. Its ranking fairly well for quite a few terms in MSN & Google. More than that, there is a certain consistency between the terms and ranking. I run a ranking report for 166 unique key phrases across Yahoo!, Google & MSN. Since I have started running these reports (7 months ago) - Yahoo! has not ranked the site in the top 100 results for ANY of the keyphrases.

Sure, its a small site and needs a touch of work - but Google & MSN are ranking it in the top 100 for 92% of the keyphrases I am monitoring.

So, I checked the webstats and our good pal Inktomi Slurp visits regularly (100 times or more a month).

I explored the domain in Yahoo and it has a decent amount of backlinks - but it looks like Yahoo! is really only focusing on the home page. Nothing else.

I always hear the opposite - my site ranks great in Yahoo! but not in Google... etc. But I am having exactly the opposite.

For the last 7 months my rankings have been fairly steady in Google & MSN - but throughout all 166 keywords, none of them have showed in the top 100 in Yahoo. Even though we are in the directory and the bot visits regularly. I don't think its an SEO problem (though I could be wrong), but what the heck is going on?!?!

Again, any help would be superbly & graciously appreciated.

Thanks -

We've pretty much gotten dissed by Yahoo. I thought it was because some spam company in Pakistan, has put some of our items on every possible free online classifieds possible, prompting the owners of those sites to call or email us with an attitude, thinking it is us. However, I'm thinking it is because Microsoft's bid to buy Yahoo, they don't want to put any effort or money into improving anything, because they don't care; they'll let MS deal with it after they sell out some more (to MS)

Sounds like your site has a penalty. We are dealing with a site that has the same story. Appears in Yahoo! Directory, does well on Google and MSN and only the home page appears in Yahoo Site Explorer.

We submitted the Yahoo! Search URL Status Review Form and received the canned response of appears the site does not comply with the Content Quality Guidelines.

Kinda sad when the company has Yahoo! PPC, a Yahoo! Directory annual fee and the search side treats you like your NOT a customer but a felon.

We think this was related to website canonicalization and fixed that issue to prevent duplicate content as they had 3 domains showing the same content. Now I'm thinking that it maybe related to websites linking to the site on the same web host (cross linking on the same IP subnet c class), though this is not malicious and the number relatively small, less than 10 and they have different IPs.

Not sure, but if Yahoo! told us we would definitely fix whatever is triggering the flag. Appearing in search is better then anonymity.

Would love to hear any success stories of Yahoo bans being lifted and what was done and the time frame for reinclusion.

CoalMarch,

Is home page only page in site explorer? If so you might be flagged. The old way was to check your log files to see if slurp comes to something other than the home page or robots txt file. If it does this and combo with home page only in Y! than your really for sure flagged. I have seen Slurp come to a site and eat 1500 pages a day on a flagged site. Flags come in all shapes with Y! from a section to your site all the way to not being listed in the index. Have you tried to use search submit basic? If so try a URL for 50 bucks plus another 50 for clicks and see if it makes it in. It runs with the same guidelines as the natural. But be warned that you could get accepted with that URL and a few weeks later that URL is rejected.

I have gotten a site re-indexed. Its not easy or a time frame that I can say yeah in 3 months your back in.

Step 1

Look over the guidelines and be totally objective. Got a few subs?, crosslinking? too many 301's?.

Step 2

Do what you need to clean up - I have personally 301'd a website that i paid six figures for to be ultra clean. Do you want Y! that bad. I can tell you some dont and some do. Only you can decide.

Step 3

Have somebody outside the SEO world or SEO vendor take a look at your site and let them comment. Most vendors will eval your site free to see you their service but what they come back with is good input. Can they see the problems? If they do then Y! will too.

Step 4

Re-submit for review. Be honest and describe the issues you have found and what you have done to clean them. Had 200 domains? tell them and what you did to clean up.

Step 5

Wait three months and re apply. Hopefully you will get in soon. But just because your in means instant traffic. I saw 4-5 months before I was getting nice referrals from Y after inclusion.

Thing is Yahoo never clears penalties, thats why we have given up on them long ago.

I would not give up on tring to get back in as much as I would set the expectation that it could take a real long time to get back in. I have personally have gotten sites back in that were out but its not easy or quick.

It has put 60-80 k uniques a month into my site so its worth it IMO

Getting back in...versus...penalty removal are two completely different things....penalties do not get removed in Yahoo.

So Danny your saying you have a site that is indexed and fully in the index but you do not get positioning based on a penalty that still is on the site?
