Yahoo said on Tuesday it was considering “strategic options” for Kelkoo, including a possible sale of the online shopping comparison service that it acquired only three-and-a-half years ago.

The internet company, which has been re-evaluating its business under its returned chief executive, paid €475m ($672m) in cash for Paris-based Kelkoo in March 2004, as part of a push to bolster its European operations. However, it acknowledged on Tuesday that it had not progressed as expected.

I wonder if it was the size of the French language ecommerce market, relunctance of French speakers to purchase online, or Kelkoo.

According to this report on eMarketer.com [emarketer.com], total online advertising spend in France for 2006 is 1.24 Billion Euros. Not a ton of money for an entire country.

What that appears to mean is that Yahoo's purchase price in 2004 was probably almost half the total online advertising spend for the entire country in 2004, which has been variously reported at 844 Million Euros [72.14.253.104] for 2003-2004.
