Why is only our index page appearing in Yahoo?

While the majority of our brands do very well in Yahoo, our cruise brand is not ranking at all - only the first page appears to have been indexed.

This is despite it being a popular site that does well in all other search engines.

Initally I put the problem down to having too much identical javascript at the top of each page - perhaps making each page look the same to Yahoo - but this has since been put into an external file.

We did have a couple of "copy cat" websites - but they've now been taken down by their ISPs.

But so far, Yahoo is still only indexing the first page (and only when you type in the url).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to encourage Yahoo to reindex the website?

I have had reply back in less than 12 hours with the standard e-mail. With same guidelines that I went through the day before.

Last time I tried, the response came within 1/2 hour.

The irony is that I have some sites that are not exactly whiter than white, and they do just fine on Y.

That says it all, webmasters have given up trying to get back in.

They might be letting some people go at Yahoo(No Work!). I would just replace the staff with a auto responed e-mail 'Sorry you triped our filter 3 years you will never be aloud back in so don't waste your time e-mailing us.'

There you go Yahoo, Cut & Paste.

If I sound bitter, it's because I am.

If the site is not coming up in Yahoo then you can get yahoo traffic by paid listing and PPC setup.

Just spend £40,000 making my site worthy of getting into Yahoo (Well I thought so), now I am broke.

They get their pound of flesh with the $299 I keep paying them for a entry into their directory.

My site is good enough to get passed that editor.

Hypocrisy at it finest.

Overture ppc can help to get yahoo traffic.

Another irony for me is that I don't have to pay for my site's directory listing in Y. It was picked up by the editors a few years back and listed. At one time Y had top five ratings and it was #3 in its category.

I am in the same boat. Time to get a new URL

Why do you have to be forced to get a new URL when Google, MSN and the Yahoo Directory editors are happy with the site.

I know my site covers all there guidelines, so there must be a separate reason why they are not letting sites in.

PPC by any chance?

I'm kind of surprised that you're worrying about yahoo. I have one site that is #1 or 2 in yahoo and google and MSN for the most categories I care about for that site.

Discounting all the long-tail searches, my traffic ratios are 7:1 G to Y (10:1 overall with long-tails). It seems like listing on Yahoo is more of a vanity than a major traffic driver.

What are other people's ratios?

What are other people's ratios?

85% G
9% Yahoo
5% MSN
1% the rest

We are working them all hard but the above stays pretty steady for us. (unfortunately)

Our site has been indexed in Yahoo for over 7 years. A week ago we lost all but a few pages, and those pages left, they lost thier Cache.

We had made significant changes to the site 3 months ago, however we did not change any of the URL's.. Just interlinking and page content.

The one thing we added was a www.widget.com/directory to make it easier to mange our link exchanges and create a directory of similar sites.

Is Yahoo so sensitive to the file /directory that they banned us? Or mabe the ability for anyone to add a link to our directory?

Any help would be appreciated....

Looks like we were also tagged for having a list of site maps on the home page.

Now I know why my competitor calls them "Guides"

Unfortunately as others have pointed out, any combination of:

multiple linked sitemaps at the footer or on page

any type of business link directory, regardless of purpose

crosslinking websites

excessive linking in anyway

Can cause this penalty. I have had sites reincluded, but it was always long and painful.

2. Site maps at the bottom of the page, or worse, on every page of your site. Thumbs down if you have the state by state site map, too. Very likely won't pass a hand check.

Martinibuster (or anyone else who can answer):
Why would having a link to your sitemap on the header of every page be a bad thing? This helps the user find content.

Where are you getting this information?

It isn't a directory itself, per se, but the "make it easier to mange our link exchanges," and the "ability for anyone to add a link to our directory," statements.

Yahoo takes a very dim view if the preponderance of incoming links is from reciprocals. That's probably the most common reason sites get hit.

And all the major SEs really don't like directories where anybody can add a link. Any of the common off-the-shelf directory software leaves a signature that is easily sussed out. Use it at your own risk.
