Novice questions here:
I was wondering if this was correct...Yahoo's spider does not crawl a site unless it is submitted to Yahoo?
Thanks!

wangdy, welcome to WmW.

Yahoo is a Directory, rather that a spidering search engine, and sites that are submitted are reviewed by editors who make a decision whether to include it. The Directory sites are the ones listed as "Web Sites."

Yahoo's secondary results are the ones referred to as "Web Pages" and are supplied by Google. So submitting to Google results in spidering and inclusion in those results. The ranking will depend on how well the site is optimized relative to others found under the same search phrases.

Thanks Marcia...
so does this mean that search engines do not 'spider' on their own? They can only crawl URLs that are submitted?

Spiders can also find your page through links.
If another site that is already indexed links to yours, they can follow that link to your site.
