IMHO Gmail's 'beta' status and associated invite system have been an extremely successful experiment in so-called 'viral' marketing...
I'm not sure what you mean by "so-called" - viral is real and affects you more than you think.
But in any case, I agree with your statement. It's the first thing I thought of when "cool" people started getting invites early on. I now have (or can have) more gmail accounts than I could possibly ever use, but they got me, either way.
Like I'm going to give up my almost ten-year old hotmail acount for them.

Oh, I wasn't at all implying that viral marketing doesn't happen. Its just the term itself that I find funny -- as powerful as the stuff can be, I don't think its going to cause someone to keel over and die. :)
