Second, though, I had to delete my cookies as part of a test I'm doing for another program I'm working on. And I can still go in to Yahoo preferences and set my results to 100, and I get 100 for any query I can come up with.
Slightly annoying in one respect because I'd just rebuilt a load of pages using CSS and getting rid of loads of the HTML and was thinking it had really worked.
I have a keyword phrase for which I used to get 100 people a day even when I was at result no.9 or 10 in Google. Now for the last 3 months, I am at no.11, and no one at all. Not a single person. So at least, as far as that one phrase is concerned, people don't even seem to be bothering enough to go to the second page. Yahoo's 10 per page can only be a bad thing from my point of view.
If it is a direct query and the results in the top 2 or 3 answer the query it is unlikely that searchers will go to a second page.
If it is a general query with a lot of spam or inaccurate info in the results then it is far more likely that the searchers will drill down a few pages looking for the site they want.
We have a site that flucuates between 7 or 8 and 11 for a genral term and it does much better at 11.
That would make 15 sponsored listings and 10 "editorial" listings, anywhere up to 10 of which might actually be sponsored listings.
They're clearly not maximizing the stockholder value with the current setup but at least switching from 20 to 10 editorial results is a step in the right direction.
I suppose for someone who does SEO, I should be a lot more concerned with what the "standard" results are, since most people don't even know how to change their homepage away from the AOL welcome screen, much less to update preferences in a search engine. :o)
Back to work for me.
Yahoo does: removes 10 free results from 1st page while still displaying its own links to its afiliate partner and still displaying the actual target site for those links...
would you consider this contradictory to the stated aim and reason for mass culling of sites?
When I use a US proxy we see 10 however the actual results are the same. I thought at first they might have US specific results however that is not the case.
We do not see our Overture ads from here unless I use the proxy as they are not shown to foreign ISP's. As we have an International business we view that as a negative. Too bad they couldn't let us pick and choose countries like AdWords does.
