If you are considering the intangible benefits, in addition to the click through traffic - it may be well worth it.
It also adds some trust to your business, because you paid to be in the directory, and you have to have an actual presence.
How do your site visitors know that - except for the 2 or 3 that come through from the directory each year?
I've regretted purchasing a directory listing as your directory description replaces your search engine results description. I submitted a wonderful and classy description only for it to be reduced from:
"Widgets UK, offering free nationwide advice for widgets and widgeting. Specialises in widget assistance in the widgeted section of the government."
to
"offers free nationwide advice."
by a very, very talented young directory editor.
Bravo! Now when I'm listed in the Yahoo search results I look like the badly written one WHEN I DIDN'T WRITE IT! Clickthrough's have never recovered from this bad description even though we have climbed three places to number four in our major keyphrase.
