Yahoo Acquires Travel Vendor FareChase [internetweek.com]

Yahoo has acquired FareChase, a travel search-engine vendor. The deal was completed Friday, July 2, but neither company has made an announcement according to a Yahoo spokesperson who confirmed the acquisition. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

They said this should not conflict with their Travelocity partnership in long-term. I sort of doubt it, but I think this is overall a good move by Yahoo.

i understand why the acquired kelkoo- and lets say the price, even high, might reflect the traffic and brand of kelkoo.
farechase is making just a few hundred $k a year, not too much traffic, and frankly, technology isn't something to pay for money these days when you can develop almost everything within 6 months or so.
so why buy this company?

and- how does this live with travelocity partnership?

They are buying POWER. If they purchase opponents, then they won't have the competition.

It just means people will have to buy from Yahoo.

still, why not build it at home- why pay 20 mills for this? they have enough programming power to create something better.

only thing i can think of-
they bought this company with stock exchange, not real money, so probably they "paid" out of pocket their much less than the real cache value.

They won't build, as I suspect that this site/company is already known and well established, and if they were to begin building a similar site, then they would have to 'build' up a brand - and that would cost more than 20 million probably....

People are used to this website's look, so why change something that works?

Their are loads of strategic reasons why Yahoo do this - why did they buy Overture? It was a Major company with good stock etc.

It's not they don't have the cash to build (they have millions lol) it's got to be more hassle inventing new
ideas,sites,concept than to just buy another business.

Want to put a list of these "family owned" travel sites up so I can go visit and decide whether to link to them?

'Cos I'm a big fan of genuine reciprocal linking (which is NOT the "link to us and we'll link to you to get a better page rank" kind), and if appropriate content "family owned" travel sites link to each other, this is a good reason to link, and helps reduce negative effects of buyouts like this.

Of course, if Yahoo were to make *us* an offer we couldn't refuse ... ;-)
