Yahoo Launches New Local Search Engine
"LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news), seeking to compete for local advertising dollars while at the same time countering a similar push by Google, on Monday rolled out a test version of a local search engine that gives users phone numbers, maps, ratings and reviews for a range of services. Additionally, I think the biggest difference between our local search beta and other local services, is depth of content (e.g., yellow pages, maps and integration with all the other Y! properties with local content…tickets, hotels, movies, plus a ton of web content). There are also narrowing features, ratings and reviews, and other stuff that you can't find in one seamless experience online today. It is, however, a beta, so any feedback or ideas on how we can make this better would certainly be appreciated (http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/local/cgi_feedback) Thx.

I've tried a few popular (I thougt) local searches -- city st widget -- and it sometimes give me a few yellow page listings, sometimes not; sometimes a couple of Yahoo travel listings, sometimes not. For a couple of searches where it seems like this would be very useful it returns nothing but regular SERPs.
I must be doing something wrong.
I'm really not that slow -- Mike went back and added the link to the local search page after I posted.
It seems to be accurate as well. I have been looking for a variety of things, camera shop, auto repair, and restaurant, and see some I am filmier with and some I didn’t know existed in my area.
The results seem similar to Google's local search so far.
I will keep playing with it and post my results.
Excellent work Yahoo!
