Hello all
My employers have asked me to get back into SEO after a couple of years out, so I'm back here at the font of all seo knowledge :)

ok, one of our main sites does very well in google for our main key words and phrases (mostly due to everyone here a couple of years ago), but in the new yahoo serps there is nothing for these words and phrases.

the site is listed in the correct yahoo directory (indeed it has been for years, in dmoz also) and will come up on a seach for the exact domain (this looks like it's the directory listing though) but is nowhere for a phrase that we are top on google for (I managed to get to about number 600 or so in the listing before giving up).

A search for the exact tile of the home page turns up a listing via a banner ad on one of our other sites, but nothing under the domain in question

I done a bit of reading around the other topics and have a couple of ideas
I can't spot a yahoo spider in the site stats. Now I'm suprised that the site can't be found, it's high in gogle, li's linked to by 100s of sites. So how do I go about forcing a crawl?

we do use 301 redirects (to get co.uk to point to .com etc) as per google best practice, would the current yahoo redirect bug cause the lack of listing or prevent spidering?

I can't imagine why it would fall foul of spam filtering, we don't cloak, link farm or use dodgy text manipulation, the home page just some text copy, a few links and a couple of images

anyone got any ideas or advice?

cheers

I think Yahoo need to answer this. Lot of problems since this change and many in your situation. It seems that in so doing Yahoo have got away from core principles and created a monster. Its like a car made up of bits from different manufacturers - the gearing is all wrong and the brakes don't work. Now wheres my bicycle......

It's called a Yahoo! penalty or ban.
Join the ever-growing club! It's a big group lately.
Don't bother paying for inclusion either. PAYING doesn't get you ANYTHING anymore, which is why we stopped. We PFI'd fast and Inktomi, and all it claims is you'll be "added", not necessarily ranked. From your description it sounds like the "not being able to be found under anything but your domain name" syndrome which means you've been penalized (i.e. banned - some say manually, Y! claims automatic) for some reason.
You can try writing to them, and let me know if it does any good other than empty promises. Y! CLAIMS they will re-review sites that got banned if you beg them, but then in the same paragraph add a disclaimer that they won't tell you WHY your site got banned (either now or in the first place), and say they won't tell you WHEN they will actually get around to it. They CLAIM it is an "automatic" algorithm and they can't do much about it. If so this must mean their algorithm is BROKE! I've read extensively on this and don't know of a SINGLE site in this boat which has been re-instated. Might as well start building a toally new domain now.
As far as reasons for the penalites, have you read their policy? It basically disqualifies EVERY site on the net if you look hard enough, including Yahoo! itself under AT LEAST 3 different line items! In other words it's basically a carte blanche legal disclaimer to do whatever the heck they feel like to whomever they feel like, while far more abusive sites stay listed even after you report them.

Don't worry too much, concentrate on Google. Yahoo! is on it's way out!

I don't really think Yahoo's on its way out. I think you should try to address this problem by writing to Yahoo at webmasterworldfeedback@yahoo.com

Many people are in the same situation but they have helped a lot of people get back in, so it's worth a try, especially if you have a quality site.

2_much,
That seems to be the rumour they're circulating, but do you, personally, actually know of any sites that were CONFIRMED to have an actual penalty and now do not?

I would start there. The 301 issue is a big problem and is contributing to many sites not showing up.

It's easy to yell and scream about every missing site being gone because it has been banned, but that doesn't make it true. When Y gets their redirect issues sorted out, I think you will see many sites return to the index.

Umm, is this meant to be in this thread?

>banned, but that doesn't make it true. When Y gets >their redirect issues sorted out, I think you will >see many sites return to the index.

In the case mentioned at the start of this thread I think he was indicating the site in question IS in the index, which rules out the 301 problem, but simply is not ranking, which pretty much guarantees a penalty.

I'm not sure that's always the case. At least I hope not!

My own case may be of interest - if not at least it's a "bump". :)

My site (in my profile) is Yahoo Slurped regularly and my pages show up under a site:http;//www.domain.com search, but cannot be found by keyword searches. However I have received a reply from a query to the webmasterworld feedback address stating "There are no current indications that your pages have been blocked from the Yahoo! index." I can also find my pages by keyword searches (and get occasional traffic from) some Far East Yahoos (Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Korea).

I started a thread about this [webmasterworld.com...] and have advised Tim of my domain name, but as yet have received no reply.

I suspect (hope!) there is some glitch in the system which has caught me out rather than a penalty, possibly to do with the fact I host in the UK and/or I have one old Inktomi PFI page. I have noticed I occasionally get a hit from search.yahoo.com but when I try to reproduce it my page is nowhere to be found.
