If like me your thinking the recent shake up in the search engine world is probably for the best with the recent spilt of Yahoo from Google and the more than likely msn search coming live later this year, I am interested to hear what everybody thinks on the importance of being in Yahoo. Not so long ago a paid Yahoo directory inclusion could influence Google’s positions. With the recent spilt should we expect this to have little or know impact and would we be wasting our money? Or in the same way DMOZ greatly affects Google will the Yahoo directory affect Yahoo search?

Google will still probably crawl the Yahoo directory - there are links to it and Google will follow them. The Yahoo Directory should still impact on Google ranking in the same wasy as DMOZ does and the same way as any site with a similar PR and number of outdoing links on the page. No special treatment is given by Google to DMOZ.

Being in the Yahoo Directory is very good and will probably continue to help Google serps... I don't know about paying for it though.

If you submit to the right category, you can get into the Y directory without handing over dollars.

Yahoo Directory is a tremendous boost in some cats, mediocre in others, and not much in still others. If you are looking to get a new site on the map thematically, paying to get in a topical category is about the best thing you can do for a quicj jump start.

We are working on having more comprehensive coverage of the Yahoo directory listings in the index soon.

What about google.co.uk Tim - will it change any time to use the new listings?

I guess it's another way into their main SERP's. Also, I think a Yahoo directory listing gets a boost in the Yahoo serps.

Still no robots.txt file in Yahoo. It would be interesting if we start seeing a Google block in there. I sure hope that doesn't happen. We seem to get tremendous credit for our Yahoo listings with Google. Does anyone know if Yahoo, to save bandwidth, does a direct transfer of data to Google and others? Sure would save a bunch of money.

Tim, because the index uses the directory title and description, it seems to hurt my ranking in the SERPs. Is Y! concidering not using the directory title and description in the SERPs?

I think they are, they like titles and descriptions written by impartial editors.
