Hi,

I would like to hear from webmasters here is Yahoo listing worth the money?
In other words, do you get many hits from Yahoo directory.
Also does Yahoo listing PR counts, since the link is not direct?

Thank you.

Yes.

Depends largely on your category and lots of other things. Use your head. If your category contains 100s of links and is a PR3 it probably pays off very slowly.

Dirkz: I'm using my head. I just want to hear from people who have experience with the subject, since I don't.
Anyway, I have 3 categories I can submit to.

The first one is PR7 with around 50-70 sites listed. Our site would be 15th from the top.

Second one is PR5 and it has only 15 sites listed. Our site would be 3rd from the top.

Third one is PR3 and it has 21 site listed. Our site would be second from the top.

Second and third category are subcategories of the first category.

What would you do if you where me?

Thank you.

I have lots of free Yahoo listings, obtained in the days before Yahoo charged. I have 10 at least, probably more. I used to get lots of traffic from Yahoo; now I get virtually none. I definitely would not pay for a listing.

Keep in mind that a Yahoo listing causes Yahoo crawler-based searches to return your Yahoo title and description. This can definitely be a liability, and I would weigh it carefully against any PageRank gain.

I should add that this has been true with Google serps. It may well change with Inktomi serps, and I think I'd wait until Inktomi is in place before I'd spring the money.

Also, it's very true that it depends on the category, and not just from the standpoint of PR and how many listings a category contains. I think you have to psych out which categories are likely to be viewed by drill-down. A city hotel category, eg, is likely to get drill-down traffic. A local catch-all business category probably won't get drill-down traffic at all. Hard to say about, eg, topical niche categories. Depends perhaps on the kind of business directories these niches might have.

My feeling is that if you aren't going to get drill-down traffic in Yahoo, you are buying PageRank and accepting the liability of a Yahoo title in the serps.

Of course, didn't want to imply anything :) Sorry if it came through offending.

The main point of "use your head" is that there is no definite answer at all. What has worked for me doesn't have to work for you for a plethora of reasons, including the starting letter of your business name :)

One more thing to consider (couldn't find it yesterday):

If you are promoting one site, then I'd say definitely, it's worth the money.

Forget it.

I pay $600 a month to have 2 of my sites as sponsored listings in a directory and my main site has completely dissappeared from Yahoo's new search results.

The site comes up top 5 regularly on G and other SE for keywords related to it - and I have been conservative in optimizing it.

In contrast, some older sites, that I barely touch anymore, nor pay Yahoo for sponsored listings, are showing up high on Yahoo!

This makes little sense. A quality site, is removed and old, junky sites are now showing up high. Seems like if a customer pays to advertise, plus the site has been reviewed by a Yahoo human, it wouldnt be completely removed from the search results.

I almost cancelled both sponsored Yahoo listings tonight but decided to give it a bit more time.

*and I have been conservative in optimizing it.*

IMO, Ink/Y! like a bit more on-page stuff, If you were optimizing that site with a possible G OOP penalty in mind......

As for a Directory listing, if you don't PFI, I'd see that as nearly mandatory now.

Glengara,

The site has plenty of content though each page is unique and has not been stuffed with keywords.

Really at a loss as to why the site isn't included in the Y search results.

I submitted our site 5 days ago. We'll see.

Anyway from everybody's experience do you get more hits from Yahoo search, or directory listing, and how much traffic are you getting from Yahoo altogether?

one more thing to consider, which is often overlooked from a Y! Directory listing and category selection standpoint, is which Y!Dir. Categories, if any, are showing up for organic searches for importantat KWs accross the engines.
