Yahoo's plans for AltaVista

"We believe that the AltaVista brand is still very strong, and has come to attract a particular type of user, and it is entirely possible that we may keep the AltaVista site to serve a particular niche of users," said Yahoo senior vice president for engineering Phu Hoang.

"I think that there may be opportunity for us to try new search features and new capabilities that are a little bit on the edge, that we are not yet ready to show up in the mainstream."

Looks like they will make AltaVista their beta site.

I hope so :), I have first place listings on AV but get very little traffic :)

AV has always been a destination site. Alltheweb has always been a Beta-showcase site. Seems that YO is reversing the scenario. YO has been promoting alltheweb to portals etc. for their search business.

AV has features, I may not get much traffic from them but i like being able to go to av.com to go to their site so fast and easy to access bablefish :P

As soon as AV started spidering again and including pages in the DB, it appeared back in my top 10 referrers and top 5 SEs. (That's 2-3% of my total traffic, by contrast G is #1 at around 25-30%)

I've always had a soft spot for them, and now I find I'm going back and using them to get a different result from the usual G SERPs.

Never thought I'd say this, but like the layout better too, it's cleaner than G! Hope Yahoo keeps AV "honest"

Buried in this report is the fact that they're shipping jobs to India, again. FC is reporting it as "the bulk" of Yahoo's R&D efforts. I guess we're all supposed to become lawyers, truck drivers, or sell real estate. Those are about the only jobs I can think of that absolutely can't be moved.
