Something brewing at Yahoo?
[hotbot.lycos.co.uk...]
Funny - since Inktomi started spidering like a madman, results in Inktomi and Google are quite similar so hopefully there won't be a big drop in traffic due to yahoo's switching of the search engine. And being listed in Yahoo (got listed within 5 hours 2 months ago) won't hurt, I guess.
Something else I noted:
entering in "word1 word2"
brings around 4 million hits. But Inktomi suggests >did you mean "word1word2"< which only has 30.000 hits. hmmm.
>results in Inktomi and Google are quite similar<
on yahoo.com.au (au.yahoo.com) standard 3keyword search *very* similar to G on top 10, but love the default 20 results, gets one of my pages in the scroll without having to rely on "next 10 results" to get some eyeballs. YeeHar!
Nice work Yahoo, recognising 10 results is hopeless. One of the things I loved about searching on the "old" hotbot was being able to choose the number of returned results. Ok, so this isn't quite the same thing, but lot's more useful.
G v Yahoo/Ink ... this might get interesting!
Cheers
JP
Postscript: seen on Yahoo oz SERP footer "Search Technology provided by Google" - DOUW!
Of course any change generates media, which is a good thing!
""We have continued to do usability testing to refine the product and one of the things that keeps coming back is that users don't know Inktomi, FAST, and Teoma," said Tom Wilde, general manager of search services for Lycos and HotBot. "But when tested against the brands HotBot, Lycos, and Ask Jeeves, almost all users recognize the names."
The new HotBot interface uses the more recognizable names. "HotBot" results are powered by Inktomi. "Lycos" results are powered by Overture's AlltheWeb search engine (formerly owned by FAST), and "Ask Jeeves" results come from the Teoma database."
