uuuuuggggghhhhhhhh?
Acquiring Overture would ensure Yahoo quick access to 100,000 advertisers and the technology to feed search-related ads across multiple niches on either the Yahoo or Overture Web portal.
(emphasis mine)
This Google Press Release [google.com] has mention of that exact same number of advertisers. So did CNET also run some fake numbers into that article, or am I missing a recent Overture press release?
As far as I know, I mentioned here at WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com] that Overture had 80,000 advertisers, and this April 2003 press release from Overture [corporate-ir.net] says that same number.
So where is CNET getting this inflated Overture advertiser figure, or did they release a PR piece that I missed? Or was this in their earnings announcement / etc? Somebody tell me something that backs up CNET's number...
But - I just scoured the net, (again) for further news that Overture has 100,000 advertisers.
They don't. So, CNET doesn't always print accurate news, or nobody cares? I find it amazing, myself.
Or...they have access to 'secret data' the rest of the world doesn't.
Very strange indeed.
Overture said it added 8,000 advertisers in the quarter, bringing its total number to 88,000...internetnews.com [siliconvalley.internet.com] April 23, 2003
Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day; Not so cnet.
One point J_G. Zero points Cnet.
Wall Stret analysts had forecast Overture to earn 63 cents a share
From your link. And it seems InternetNews.com can't spell correctly. :)
Does that mean I get 2 points?

figment, Yahoo (in that CNET article) claims 85,000 advertisers. Surely there isn't that much overlap in the two audiences? And how would CNET know to merge the data, and dedupe that many companies?
Can't I just say "there are a billion grains of sand on the beach?"
Sure, it would have been better journalism to put in some type of qualifier like "about 100,000" or "almost 100,000" but I don't really see what the big deal is.
Holding a online article to the same rigors of a SEC report doesn't make sense to me.
Source [corporate-ir.net]
Well, it's not that big a deal but for 2 things:
1) Google announced that number (see my post above) saying it has the largest internet advertising network on the planet
2) CNET weilds (though I could be mistaken here) a lot of power & influence in the internet / tech industry.
Overture is a public company...how many investor's might have gotten really excited that Overture suddenly hopped back into a tie for first place?
I know, if I didn't know better, I may have run out & bought some stock...then, been very upset to find out it was a misprint that still hasn't been corrected despite a message sent asking for a change or correction.
