I have a question. If someone was using the ODP dump on one of their servers (for whatever reason) would you recieve another link to your site increasing the popularity or would the spiders notice its ODP dump and ignore that incomming link?

Another interesting reason to get in DMOZ is the following: [aolsearch.aol.com...]

It is their version of the google directory.

in regards to this:
"I have a question. If someone was using the ODP dump on one of their servers (for whatever reason) would you recieve another link to your site increasing the popularity or would the spiders notice its ODP dump and ignore that incomming link?"

I have seen it show up as a link for some of my sites...one thing you need to realize is: to AN ACTUAL PERSON it is a link and may help them get to your site.

DMOZ. a DMOZ listing ( if you can ever get one ... ) will get you into Google and any other SE which imports/uses DMOZ's listing.

DMOZ is more valuable in the short run, and in the long run (because DMOZ is the future of the Internet.)

Well i guess i can get rid of that cable connection and go back to a dial up since it will take so long anyway.

I don't think so! Unless Google or Yahoo takes full control of it.

Actually I think they are losing out, if they didn't bring in more professional editors they are done!

neither google or yahoo will ever own the odp.
[dmoz.org...]

yes the odp needs more editors, if you want to help try applying.

I applied twice and they rejected my application without indicating any reasons.

Obviously nothing in the social contract would prohibit ODP from being owned by Google or Yahoo.

And the standard editor rejections letter always has reasons listed.

I know its off topic, but there was an interesting article in May Scientific American [sciam.com] on parallel universes.

They are not as daft as you imply ;)

suggestions for becoming an editor.

1. don;t bother trying if you are going in to add your own url.
2. pick a cat in regional not business.
3. come up with usefull urls to add. check they are not in the directory already.
4. read the description guidelines and write suitable ones, i.e NON-COMMERCIAL ones.
5. only bother choosing cat that are 10-30 in size to start with. you prove yourself and then move up.

my experience is much as the above. I wanted to edit a category that seemed suitable to my work. of course.
4 attempts at applying failed. I then applied for a regional cat with <10 entries. Now have made 100+ edits and have more cats to edit.
the ODP is not commercial, not for commercial gain. If you want to edit then don't approach it that you want to add your own url. You won't get accepted.

This is often difficult to do as the search function usually lags. I've been told a usefull tool is searching on Google with "site:www.dmoz.org domainname.com" or something to that effect. I should note that the last time the search database was updated was 4/25 which in fact would make it newer than Google's relic.

I'd say DMOZ, as there are hundreds of bits of software that let people copy the DMOZ database. Once you get listed in DMOZ you will notice your site popping up on loads of other directory sites which have cloned DMOZ, good for link popularity.
