Will Yahoo be flexible?

I received a notice from Yahoo back in December that one of my client sites was up for renewal for the yearly $299 "subscription."

My client decided not to stay in the directory, in the meantime I got very busy with traveling, etc. and didn't get back to Yahoo quickly.

At the time, I believed that I had a safety net in that the card that was provided to Yahoo at the time of initial enrollment had an expiration date of 2/2002. The card was renewed (but the expiration date was never updated at Yahoo). I believed that in order to bill the card again in January 2003, Yahoo would enter the expiration date and their entry for this charge would be rejected by my credit card company.

To my surprise, the billing for the $299 subscription went thru. As I said, I got busy with traveling, etc. and didn't get to it like I should have, but I thought the expiration date would keep them from billing my card. My fault.

I've emailed them about this, no response. Today I talked with one of their reps and he wouldn't budge an inch. I even offered to work a deal with him where I would pay for 1 month of the "subscription." No go.

He said that it is not a subscription that the $299 goes to have their editors look at the site again and make sure it is still in the right category. This I find hard to believe.

Regardless, has anyone been in this situation and had it resolved in their favor? I've made errors with other businesses and they've worked with me and been flexible.

Thanks for your help. I could use my $299 back.

Hi Spinweb,

Sounds like a tricky situation. I've had issues like this with Yahoo.

Have you considered a chargeback? Tell your credit card company you didn't intend to pay for that.

Otherwise, I doubt Yahoo would give your money back.

Thanks 2_much. I'm stuck with this one. I did contest the charge with my bank card, we got on a conference call with Yahoo and I was shot down.

Lesson learned.

I did set up all my other sites so that the "subscription" expires on the due date and I won't run the risk of getting charged again if I miss the notification.

Oh yes, the $299 is not a "subscription," it is so they can look at the site again and make sure it is still in the right category, sorry forgot. What does that take, all of 15 minutes?

I've paid $299 to have a physician look me over for 15 minutes before. Obviously, I need to become either a physician or Yahoo editor if I want to make the big bucks. ;)
