YPN is very similar to AdSense in a lot of ways, but it has some quirks to work out during the beta period. It has ten ad unit sizes (same as AdSense) and similar reporting features in the control panel, including downloadable reports.
You can also block advertisers, customize channels for tracking (although only 50 of them), and create ad unit styles for display.
Ad units look similar to AdSense, although the text is larger, and hence shows fewer ads. For example, the large rectangle only shows three ads with YPN instead of four.
A couple cool features - you can transfer your earnings to your Yahoo Search Marketing account.
The home page of the control panel features your total daily earnings, and it tells you what time your earning stats were last updated, which is great for stat junkies.
Now, the question everyone wants to know. YPN is open for beta testing by invite only. But you can apply to become a YPN beta tester [advision.webevents.yahoo.com] and hopefully be one of the ones invited:
If you're interested in being considered for the Yahoo! Publisher Network beta program, please enter your information below. Participants of the program must be a resident of the U.S., with valid U.S. Social Security number or Tax ID.
I would assume they plan to open it to those who don't meet the above criteria when it launches out of beta by the end of this year.
I told him that for the last 24 hrs., no AdSense ads have run, and since no YPN ads have displayed, I have lost revenue. He told me to go ahead and reactivate my AdSense ads and send him the full source code for any page that should display a YPN ad and isn't.
Will see how it goes from here.
I will tell you, I love the idea of talking with a human being and not contacting support through an email form. This is where YPN most definitely has one-up on Google as far their offerings go.
Would you foresee Yahoo! considering dropping the PSA ads and replacing it both on the advertiser end and on the publisher end with a ROS? Idea being, for advertisers who don't care about targetting keywords they can bid on run of site. Anywhere you see a PSA instead a run of site ad would appear?
On a scale of 1-10, I give their support team about an 8. They were pretty responsive to me....but I think 2 weeks to fix the problem was a little much.
Ads ran for part of the day yesterday, in rotation with my G! ads. Looks like my CPM is about 2x more for YPN than for G!...but it was barely one day of running the ads.
One thing I have noticed......my CPM for G! has gone up over the past 3-4 weeks. Prolly about 20-30%.
Anyone else see their G! earnings go up....around the time YPN was launched?
I would really like to see them come up with their own version of the alternate ad, so I can put something else there myself. I still see a lot of PSAs that are not stop word related unfortunately.
I don't have a challenge with the PSA situation as I understand that it is Beta and they are working out the kinks. I haven't seen much of them since the first couple of days. A delay of two weeks for that one challenge may be warranted since that is probably not the only issue there fixing ;).
Received a call from Yahoo yesterday for my feedback and have also submitted some comments through the control panel. I was told they are reviewing every suggestion and comment through that system. If we want to see changes, now is probably the time to submit input!
Here is what I have noticed.
1) For me, YPN payout is a lot more than G. It is pretty significant actually.
2) G is much better at targeting page specific content. The YPN ads that are showing are general in terms of being related to my industry, but not necessarily the topic on a specific page.
3) I am seeing the click thru rate for G is about 4x higher than for YPN. This is prolly due to targeting better ads and may also be attributed to the fact users are very used to and comfy with clicking AdSense ads.
But, like I said..it has only been about 5 days or so...will see how the next couple of weeks pan out.
Anyone else have feedback on payouts, click rates, targeting, etc.?
My content is very diverse and Google's targeting seemed always to focus on just one aspect, when many more were available. Yahoo seems to be more robust and freewheeling.
I've often wondered why ads had to be "tightly targeted" when most of my audience is probably - like many people - interested in all kinds of things. I mean, I used to run some newspapers and we never had exact targeting. Some bars (those which catered to a more professional crowd) wanted to be on the editorial pages, while others went for the sports section. Some just wanted page position, so I see Yahoo being a little less rigid a good thing for newsy sites and less focused people and sites, like me.
I'll be honest - even in my most passionate areas of expertise, I often get burnt out or bored and have a need to move into another area. I guess that's why my site will forever be in flux.
Just some thoughts...
I have a fairly large site (100k pages indexed, 25k unique daily). Yesterday I ran Yahoo and Google to alternate on my pages, 50/50. Yahoo outperformed Google 2 to 1 on revenue despite having 1/6th of the clickthrough rate.
This obviously translates into higher earnings per click, but much less targetted ads with Yahoo. Perhaps the ads will become more and more targetted as time goes on, after all, this was only the first day.
So far so good.. my next order of business is to determine which channels Google still outperforms Yahoo, and start dedicating Yahoo and Google to their winning channels respectively.

I am seeing very similar results.....
On another note...does talking about this stuff violate G's TOS?
From their TOS (https://www.google.com/adsense/localized-terms):

"Google Confidential Information" includes without limitation: (a) all Google software, technology, programming, specifications, materials, guidelines and documentation relating to the Program; (b) click-through rates or other statistics relating to Site performance in the Program provided to You by Google; and (c) any other information designated in writing by Google as "Confidential" or an equivalent designation. However, You may accurately disclose the amount of Google’s gross payments to You pursuant to the Program. Looks like section (b) prohibits discussing results?
Doesn't look like the actual form to apply works in FF though...just IE.
