New to YPN - Tips?

I am rather frustrated with Adsense earnings, and a few friends told me their YPN earnings are much better so I applied and was accepted.

Are there any big differences I should be aware of between Adsense and YPN? From my brief reading of the TOS, they seem basically the same in that area.

Is there anything you did (or didn't do) with Adsense that worked/didn't work with YPN?

The main thing for me was that YPN has no smart pricing.. as of right now anyways. So CTR is what matters, the more clicks, the more $$$.

Isn't that what the "Project Panama" thing is all about?

Project Panama I thought was mainly about geotargetting. Some of us are getting ads for New York businesses, although the IP is out of Missouri... I think that's what it is about. I'm sure it covers more than just that, but yeah.

Anyways, it's not suppose to go into full use until Q3.

I have a feeling I will be dropping YPN. This is pretty pathetic. I have always heard YPN pays much more than AS, but honestly, I make about 5 times more with AS.

Difference in earnings between G and Y seems to depend on the topic of your web site.

I have a site about golf - G brought me some clicks, I changed some pages to Y and made more money.

Another site about travel/hotels - G brings more income than Y.

You just have to experiment until you find the right mix - which ad network works better on each site.

Is there a MFA problem - or rather a MFYpn problem on YPN? Does Yahoo have any controls that AdSense lacks?

The targetting with YPN is still worse, and of course there's less advertisers as well. So CTR is a lot less with YPN. Also, there are some spamming going on.. I wouldn't necessarily call it MFYPN, just 'trying to break the system'. An example of this would be auto-related ads in the dating targetting section.

Also, the ads don't rotate like on adsense. If you have two pages which are on the same subject, chances are the same exact ads will show up on those pages. Also, if you have more than one ad box on the same page, the same ads will appear in all boxes - tending to annoy some visitors.

I'm sure once it goes out of Beta many of these will be fixed, however, right now it causes some problems for us publishers.

Based on about six months of data, comparing two very similar themed sites, one with AdSense and one with YPN, I'm seeing YPN earnings per visitor about 1/2 that of Adsense.

I think Yahoo can improve earnings by better ad targeting.

I'm happy that there's more than one player in the game now, so I'll continue to support Yahoo even though my earnings are lower. That's the smart thing to do. Having competitive players is essential to long term survival of everyone in the business.
