Hi SelenaQuintanilla and Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]

If design is important to you, there are some options: learn to edit your theme or change your theme or hire a person who does this kind of work.

Learning to edit your theme is free and it takes only your time to learn basic CSS (style) and understand the html used in your theme.

WordPress is a popular platform because it allows beginners to start quickly, but for long term success it is a good idea to learn how to make your site do what you want it to do, to look the way you want it to look.

There are plugins for everything but relying on plugins too much can create conflicts between plugins and cause errors. It can also be a security problem. Try to use only the basic plugins that your site cannot function without and keep them up to date.

A good place for free learning is the WordPress learning section: https://learn.wordpress.org/

Optimization and Design are two different things.

Sometimes you build the site first as in content and value for users FIRST, then make it pretty. Makes no difference if a CMS (aka WordPress) or simple HTML and CSS.

#1 - value for users, without it you're dead in the water these days
#2 - page speed, you want it, and you can get it by performing a page speed test and optimizing accordinly..

What the site looks like impacts metrics a little but not nearly as much as #1 and #2, focus on those and you're 90% there. The last 10% involves getting the word out, making sure everything works on all browsers etc. Making a site sexy/cool/pretty took a back seat to minimalism at some point.

Good luck
