I just bought a new domain name, and added it to my plan on HostGator. For this, I followed the steps on wpbuffs, which seemed easy enough.

However, an hour or so after, I still can't access the admin, even though I did receive an email with credentials from QuickInstall. The domain is parked by Godaddy.

I read on Quora someone talking about changing from the default server to custom servers, but I am quite confused at this stage. I looked around on the internet and what I could find was related to transferring domain registration, which I don't really care much about (I think). I managed to find how on Godaddy, I think, but I have no idea what to enter for the "Name server" fields. ,

Anyway, I am more of a SEO guy than I am a web dev. It was easy enough to create my primary site following a tutorial, but I am really confused on what's going on with the second one. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Fwiw, I previoulsy

When you added it to your plan at GD was that your hosting plan or your domain registration plan? If you have not arranged for hosting of the domain you would need to do that and then your host can provide you with the proper DNS to enter at your domain registrar. You can also use public DNS if you want in addition.

Thanks for your fast reply.

I honestly have no idea. From the dashboard, I basically clicked "Addon Domain" under the CPanel section, followed the steps to create the Addon, which seemed to work. Then from there, I went to QuickInstall, then Popular> Wordpress

Do you have any pointers on how I can check if I did it right or not?

I am honestly lost when it comes to this technical jargon to be honest, I struggle to understand your last sentence. If you can point me towards ressources that would enable me to get a better grasp of these concepts/steps, that would be great ! I am willing to learn, but have no idea where to start.

Learning all about WordPress is free at wordpress.org: [learn.wordpress.org...]

You can browse through the topics there and see step by step. They detail the steps for all the 'technical' stuff. CPanel has tools that might not be doing what you wanted to do because you need to own the domain before you can set up DNS for it and use WP.

It really is important to learn about the non-wp stuff because not knowing is dangerous with a popular platform like WP. Several thousands of people spend their days looking for vulnerabilities that newbie webmasters forgot to check or never heard of. Learn how to protect your setup - it is all covered at that wp link above.

When you bought the domain name, you should have received all the information about how to use the domain from your host. If you only bought the domain name and added it on to your hosting plan you may or may not be able to use it to set up WP. IF you cannot access the domain you should review the information supplied by the registrar (where you bought the domain) and your hosting supplier. The Host should be able to help with the DNS (Domain Name Server) questions.

perhaps this overview will be helpful:

the registration of your domain is managed by a domain registrar, which is also where you specify the domain name servers that are hosting your DNS configuration.
the DNS configuration specifies which servers (IP addresses) are handling various internet services (e.g., web, email, etc) for your domain.
the web server at the IP address you specify must be configured to listen to specific web ports for requests to your desired hostnames.

ideally you want to have separate service providers as your domain registrar, your DNS host, and your web host.

From the dashboard, I basically clicked "Addon Domain" under the CPanel section, ...

this is all web hosting terminology.
where is the domain registered?
where is the DNS hosted?
use the whois command or a similar tool to figure out where the DNS is hosted.
then change the DNS configuration to point to your HostGator IP address instead of where it's parked at GoDaddy.
if you can't get access to the DNS configuration, go into your registrar account and change to a DNS service provider you can access.

I do own the domain, this I know for sure.

But I have to admit, I have only superficially looked at the technical aspect of things, especially on the operational side. I am used to having more knowledgeable/skilled people I can ask to do it for me. For good reasons it seems, because it's most often fast and functional :)

I am as careful as I can, keep up to date with vulnerabilities and work with a very low amount of plug ins, when it comes to my main. My job as a SEO for someone else makes that easy for me, it's two birds one stone. I am sure I could benefit a lot from learning more, thanks for the tip. I'll definitely be checking it out, and maybe ask my question there as well if I can't make it work by myself.

Btw, thanks so much for your help and commitment. I don't know how to upvote, but I remember you were among the first to help me last time I needed it. And it also turned out to be insightful advice. It's really refreshing and nicely surprising to have a useful and dynamic forum on hand. hopefully, I get enough out of it that the sub will be worth for me to pay on my own dime.

Thank you phranque+

I'll try and answer to the best of my ability

I don't want to risk saying something that I think it the right terminology and confuse you by mistake, so I'll try and keep it simple. I think that's probably the most insightful I can be given my limited understanding of the topic.

I bought the domain on godaddy. Just entered it into the search bar, it was free, I bought it.

At no point anything was mentioned about hosting.

I knew my plan with hostgator allowed me to have more than one domain, so I went over there to add the new domain as an addon.

That's it for the story. To try to answer your questions:

where is the domain registered?
I assume Godaddy, that's where I bought it.
where is the DNS hosted?
It says its own the default server at godaddy, so I assume I need to change something there.

This is what Whois shows me if that helps;

Name Server: NS31.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
Name Server: NS32.DOMAINCONTROL.COM

these look like default nameservers for GoDaddy-registered domains.
they are certainly still configured to point to the parked domain hosting on GoDaddy's web server.
the number of domains hosted at that IP address also indicate this:
IP Address34.102.136.180 - 29,572,919 other sites hosted on this server

your GoDaddy registrar account should give you access to either change DNS providers or reconfigure the default nameservers so they resolve to your HostGator web hosting.

If some less technical parts of the forum need contributions in the field of SEO in general, let me know and I'll be happy to contribute. I have a very significant amount of data on hand in various industries and countries that may or may not prove useful/insightful.
