I want to create a private wiki with wordpress and make it my own knowlegebase
Is this a good idea? Do people do that? Do I need to have some plugins?

thanks

Too many variables/queries.

Will this be live on the web? (Private indicates not)
Why WP when a database will do the same thing?

Curious as to choice of platform.

Yes it will work--more or less--but WordPress is not the ideal tool to maintain a wiki and all the relations between the different documents with in-document links. There is a list of wiki software on Wikipedia (where else ;)) which you may want to check to see which platform best matches your specific wishes.

I will sound like a broken record, but a database will serve you better for data retrieval than a cms, even though WP is based on a database. Too many gizmos in between. if this will never face the net your options are immense, and mostly superior.

SQL on the backend and whatever you code for the front. This is adventures in computing!

Wordpress might look ideal, but if you have limited knowledge about management of CMS I would avoid it completely. It is the biggest target there is and limiting traffic to a set of IPs is neither simple nor wise as the software needs constant updating.

Me? I use folders full of searchable .txt, .pdf and .rtf files. These files are further sorted into category folders so if I am looking for information I have read about gardening, for example, that would be a search of my Gardening folder. Image files are more complex in how they are sorted and might appear in more than one folder. A lot depends on what tools and OS you are familiar with using but the same thing can be done on a dedicated external drive or on your desktop without involving a domain. Drive capacity is the only limit. If it is for your own use, it does not make sense to put it online. There will be bots, always.

A friend uses Docuwiki as a wiki. It can be local and does have search. I'd avoid using WP as a private wiki because of the numerous security issues with keeping it private.

As long as security concerned I have a dedicated server I can use , my own dedicated server, secured with firewall , restricted by IP address. All ports except needed are open so security is good enough on the other hand it is not very sensetive information what I need is functionality
