Scenario:
Currently, Wordpress is installed in a folder (Not the root of the domain)
In the root folder, there is a single html file uploaded as an index.html with links to the wordpress categories etc in the folder/categories etc ie domain/folder/category1

I would like to have Wordpress in the root folder but 'moving' the current installation from the folder to the root would obviously break all of the urls (although these could be redirected.)

Any suggestions on how best to have Wordpress in the root - moved from the current folder (I don't think that having two Wordpress installations would be the best idea)

A WordPress installation in a folder can be shown from the root directory - that is, it would be the home page of the site. The details are at the WP Codex [codex.wordpress.org] site they are clear and fairly easy. I set up one of my first WP sites this way and it's been fine for over 10 years. This method can also be used to "move" a WP site to the root directory with just a few edits rather than redirects/rewrites.
