According to a report, WordPress now powers as much as 30% of the web, up 5% sine the last survey in 2015.

It’s worth noting here that this figure relates to the entire Web, regardless of whether a website uses a content management system (CMS) or not. If we’re looking at market share, WordPress actually claims 60.2 percent, up from 58.7 percent in November 2015. By comparison, its nearest CMS rival, Joomla, has seen its usage jump from 2.8 percent to 3.1 percent, while Drupal is up from 2.1 percent to 2.2 percent. I wonder how they define "the entire Web", is it based on the whole number of internet pages, the whole number of domain names, the whole number of hits, etc... because Facebook, Twitter, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, eBay, Youtube, Instagram etc... already certainly represent most of Web activity.

A prime target for hackers. One single exploit will provide access to 30% of the web. No wonder I see malicious bots constantly hitting my server up with requests for /wp-login .

The WP ecosphere obviously helps. Loads of the plugins are just plain daft, though. If there were a formalised way to sanitise data, grab data from 3rd parties and the like (which isn't inconceivable), a lot of the security issues (and maybe performance issues) would go away.
