A while back, Wordpress announced that Wordpress.com would be built in Javascript using the React framework. The new version of Jetpack is now using React
This week we shipped Jetpack 4.3 (and 4.3.1) which includes a total visual redesign of the Jetpack user interface and a front-end built entirely in React—the same JavaScript library which powers WordPress.com and which enables us to provide you with a faster and more modern user experience.

At the same time, they announced Jetpack Pro. The basic account is $99/site/year and includes
*Daily Malware Scanning
*Daily Offsite Backups
*30-day Backup Archive
*Unlimited Backup Storage Space
*Automated Restores
*Spam Protection
*Easy Site Migration

I think advanced webmasters can roll their own solution for cheaper. For example, I pay $5/month for automated off-site backups of an entire VPS with easy restore (yes, I had to restore a few weeks ago and it was easy).
But for people with a single website, this could be pretty attractive - it brings a lot of the Wordpress.com premium advantages to a self-hosted site. Of course, it still doesn't protect you from stupidity or themes and plugins with exploits, but it's not bad.
It might also pose some challenges for ManageWP, which AFAIK remains the most cost-effective solution for managing multiple sites
