A new ransomware variant appears to be ripping through WordPress sites encrypting data and demanding a payment of half a bitcoin to release files.

The website variant of CTB Locker is encrypting all files on WordPress-powered sites and replacing the index.php with a file that displays instructions for paying the ransom.

Nasty stuff. If you are not a PHP driven site you're okay.

I wouldn't wish WordPress on my worst enemy. Recently I put up a (self-hosted) WP site with an Article Directory theme and after a few days the thing started barely loading or wouldn't load at all. I tried everything in the world to figure out what was wrong with it but nothing worked.

I put up another non-WP article directory script site (on the same server, BTW) that's written in PHP and it loads just fine. I haven't looked back.

Unfortunately I lost about 800 articles I had edited and uploaded myself on the WP site.
