Anyone know how to rename or remove "category"?

I have asked this before without any solution and wonder if time has evolved for an answer...

I want to either rename or remove the word "Category" in the category pages (and not affect posts) - if I type any word or character in the Category base box the category then redirects to a post...

anyone?

I believe the setting can be found in Permalinks > Category...

According to WP: [codex.wordpress.org...] you can use any custom name to replace the default /category/ structure by creating a custom category base (not in the permalink settings, in addition to them):
You may enter custom bases for your category and tag URLs here. For example, using /topics/ as your category base would make your category links like http://example.org/topics/uncategorized/. If you leave these blank the defaults will be used.

It sounds like that is what you were wanting, but maybe I misunderstood. Wherever the word /category/ appears in the URL, you would see /topics/ (or /autos/)

Is /news/ your post directory?

If you added /news/%post_id%/%postname%/ to your permalink structure you may not be able to customize further. The custom structure should only be using the specified /%tags%/ format. WP may interpret your setting as though you have already customized the category base. I do not say that this is the reason because I have not seen this kind of setup discussed, but it might be the cause for any other permalink issues. Non-standard settings can have non-standard consequences.

If you want to find out for certain, I would ask at the WP support area where those who built the machine know how the parts work together.

You can do this with the Yoast SEO plugin.
